The highly anticipated second volume of Tara Burns' captivating and provocative sex work stories

I've been waiting months for this book to come out. Reading Tara Burns' stories is like looking through a magic kaleidoscope and being suddenly able to see, in clear relief, the many beautiful and contradictory layers of the human condition, all twisted together and sparkling with light and color and shadow. At some point, while reading these stories, you will forget that you are reading about sex work at all, and you will feel as though you are reading about something much, much more important, although you won't be able to name what it is, exactly. It will be a feeling that you have, and you'll finish the book, and you'll push your cat of your lap and shuffle into the kitchen to make a cup of tea, and that feeling will stay with you for days.

A fascinating glimpse into another world

As much as I enjoyed Tara's other book, this one shows her tremendous growth as a writer. It was poetic at times and the language was much more concise. My favorite parts were the peeks into the mythical and the hypnoses encounters. I want to know more.

Personal and Political Identity of a Sex Worker

In this second installment of Whore Diaries, Burns touches upon various stereotypes, one being the general social assumption that sex workers choose this line of work out of necessity. In a capitalistic culture in which one's work is so often central to one's identity, I wondered at the tightrope she must walk when discussing her identity with those outside this co-culture in which she works. At one point Burns' describes her work, saying, "This is what I want to always be doing. I love this strange overlapping and balancing of money, power, ethics, and healing." And yet, her work as identity is something that mainstream, patriarchal culture does not allow her to share with us. It's all on the down low. We have to seek her out. We are not allowed access without specific intention on our (the readers) part. And while it would be easy for me to blame the patriarchy, I suspect that even within the feminist community, Burns' contribution is shunned by some. Perhaps we really are living in The Handmaid's Tale. Regardless of the cultural and political constraints that inform a sex worker's everyday life, Burns weaves a story that descriptively holds our attention and promotes heightened curiosity on the part of her readers.
