Korean Workers and Neoliberal Globalisation examines current trends and transformations within the Korean labour movement since the 1990s.

It has been a common assumption that the ‘third wave’ of democratisation, the end of the Cold War, and the spread of neoliberal globalisation in the latter part of the 20th century have helped to create an environment in which organised labour is better placed to overcome bureaucratic national unionism and transform itself into a potential counter-globalisation movement. However, Kevin Gray argues that despite the apparent continued phenomena of labour militancy and the rhetoric of anti-neoliberalism, the mainstream independent labour movement in Korea has become increasingly institutionalised and bureaucratised into the new capitalist democracy. This process is demonstrated by the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions’ experience of participation in various forms of policy making forums. Gray suggests that as a result, the KCTU has failed to mount an effective challenge against processes of neoliberal restructuring and concomitant social polarisation.

The Korean experience provides an excellent case study for understanding the relationship between organised labour and globalisation. Korean Workers and Neoliberal Globalisation will appeal to students and scholars of Korean studies and International Political Economy, as well as Asian politics and economics.

Hard Measures looks at the almost impossible task of predicting who will attack America next and when and where.

This book is written by a 25+ year CIA veteran with little or no reason to not be telling it like it was when he was in the thick of it before and after 9/11. He identifies many of the fellow participants, some of the "hangers-on" that claim to have been there, and praises those by name that deserved his admiration and thanks. Interesting how simply being accused of something in the agency was enough to have you all but convicted by the management and then summarily "hung out to dry". JR's insight on "enhanced interrogation" during his tenure also makes this book worth the time and the price. Not a "I did this..." book but rather a detailed look inside an agency tasked with and damned for having to work "in the field" around the world and gather, verify and report just that information that MIGHT be important before anyone else learns just what part that piece plays in the future. A nearly impossible assignment made all the more difficult being played out by the politicians that think they know more than career case officers in the CIA. A damn good read.

VARIOUS ESSAYS WRITTEN BY THE “GREAT PESSIMIST”

Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) was a German philosopher, whose major work is The World as Will and Representation, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. Schopenhauer also wrote other works such as Essays and Aphorisms, Essay on the Freedom of the Will, On the Basis of Morality, On the Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason, etc.

Schopenhauer wrote in the Preface, “In these pages I shall speak of The Wisdom of Life in the common meaning of the term, as the art, namely, of ordering our lives so as to obtain the greatest possible amount of pleasure and success… Now whether human life corresponds… to this conception of existence, is a question to which… my philosophical system returns a negative answer… in elaborating the scheme of a happy existence, I have had to make a complete surrender of the higher metaphysical and ethical standpoint to which my own theories lead; and everything I say here will to some extent rest upon a compromise…”

Besides the “Wisdom of Life,” this book also contains brief essays under the section headings of “The Art of Literature,” and “Studies in Pessimism.”

He observes, “intellectual dullness is at the bottom of that vacuity of soul which is stamped on so many faces, a state of mind which betrays itself by a constant and lively attention to all the trivial circumstances in the external world. This is the true source of boredom---a continual panting after excitement, in order to have a pretext for giving the mind and spirits something to occupy them. The kinds of things people choose for this purpose show that they are not very particular, as witness the miserable pastimes they have recourse to, and their ideas of social pleasure and conversation; or again, the number of people who gossip on the doorstep or gape out of the window.” (Pg. 18-19)

He states, “…we come to see how superficial and futile are most people’s thoughts, how narrow their ideas, how mean their sentiments, how perverse their opinions, and how much of error there is in most of them… And if we ever have had an opportunity of seeing how the greatest of men will meet with nothing but slight from half-a-dozen blockheads, we shall understand that to lay great virtue upon what other people say is to pay them too much honor.” (Pg. 49-50)

He asserts, “The cheapest sort of pride is national pride; for if a man is proud of his own nation, it argues that he has no qualities of his own of which he can be proud; otherwise he would not have recourse to those which he shares with so many millions of his countrymen.” (Pg. 57)

He notes, “The value of posthumous fame lies in deserving it; and this is its own reward. Whether works destined to fame attain it in the lifetime of the author is a chance affair, of no very great importance. For the average man has no critical power of his own, and is absolutely incapable of appreciating the difficulty of a great work. People are always swayed by authority; and where fame is widespread, it means that ninety-nine out of a hundred take it on faith alone. If a man is famed far and wide in his own lifetime, he will, if he is wise, not set too much value upon it, because it is no more than the echo of a few voices, which the chance of a day has touched in his favor.” (Pg. 106)

He says, “only a really distinguished man will be able to produce anything worth reading; for the others will think nothing but what anyone else can think. They will just produce an impress of their own minds; but this is a print of which everyone possesses the original.” (Pg. 117-118)

He contends, “Most man of learning are very superficial. Then follows a new generation, full of hope, but ignorant, and with everything to learn from the beginning. It seizes, in its turn, just so much as it can grasp or find useful on its brief journey and then too goes its way. How badly it would fare with human knowledge if it were not for the art of writing and printing! This it is that makes libraries the only sure and lasting memory of the human race…” (Pg. 147)

This is certainly not one of Schopenhauer’s “major works,” but his writing style is as always clear and readable (if unduly cynical!), and this collection is well worth reading for anyone studying Schopenhauer.

Without any alternative

I have used this book in my computer organization class (Istanbul Bilgi University, Computer Science dept.) and I must admit that it brought a very fresh perspective to second year computer science students. For the first time they were able to see the process of designing a computer from the ground up.

The book is very suitable for self-study or classroom use: it has an excellent website, all the required HDL simulator, assembler, CPU and VM emulator and compiler are freely available and easy to run on any platform (they are all coded in Java).

Of course there are simplifications such as the lack of interrupts and multhithreading but this book prepares the students very well for 3rd and 4th year courses. Every chapter has very well and clearly defined goals and projects that are %100 self-contained. That means even if you skip a chapter you can work out the next project without any loss in implementation.

If you or your students want to have a grasp what it means to build a computer starting from logic gates, hardware definition languages, up to the ALU, RAM, CPU, assembler, virtual machine and compilation of an object oriented high level language, then this book is the best choice. It is one of the most hands-on book I've ever seen in this subject matter and at that intermediate level.

Outstanding survey

When I say "survey," I mean a wide-ranging view of what goes into a computing system. This unique book goes into more depth than the word suggests, though, since it presents every level as a project for the student to carry out. This starts with the processor: the authors present an elegant but very stripped-down instruction set, slightly reminiscent of the PDP-8, and an equally stripped-down hardware description language (HDL). The exercise is to implement that processor using that HDL, and verify it using a simulator the authors provide. Next, the student implements the assembler for that instruction set, an interpreter in the spirit of the Java Virtual Machine, a compiler, and a simple operating system. Although each project could be a term course in itself, the authors display a real knack for extracting the essentials of each and boiling them down to a minimal but functional kernel. The results, although they might be toy systems, demonstrate the framework around which larger, industrial systems would be built.

I've taught HDL-based logic design, operating systems, and object-oriented design. Each level of system implementation makes sense only in terms of the levels above and below it, but each is normally taught in isolation. This leaves an odd lack of context and motivation. It never explains to a processor designer what hardware support an OS needs, never explains to the OS implementor what the hardware can (and can't) do, or what the application developer requires. This philosophy even lets computer science students graduate in ignorance of or disdainful of the hardware on which their whole career depends. And, at every level, crucial basics like "what is a stack frame?" go unexplained and unexplored. This book is the only one I know that not only explains but demonstrates how the pieces fit together.

I suppose there are many ways to use this book. I imagine it as a course for well-prepared and motivated third-year students, the ones who've seen all the basics, need something to forge the pieces into a meaningful whole, and who can still choose more coursework based on what they learn here. It would also be helpful for software types thrown into embedded development or for any engineer who wants a fuller understanding of what the computing platform really is. This has my highest recommendation.

Great intro

This is the only text I know of that walks up the entire stack - from logic gates to the OS - and has you actually implement each layer. It is not really a text book in the traditional sense but rather more of a lab book. The authors give just enough information (just a few pages) to complete each of the projects.

It is the projects (and the accompanying software from the book's website - which runs flawlessly) that make this book really work. You are not going to get much out of the book if you don't do the projects. These projects are not end of chapter exercises that test if you understood what you've read. Nearly all of the understanding you get will come from doing the projects and the book is written with this intent. That's why it really is a lab book - you'll learn from doing rather than from reading.

This book will give you a gut for how computation systems work and are designed. The text doesn't have the breadth or depth that you would get from the traditional textbooks on these subjects (digital design, computer architecture, compilers, and operating systems) but it gives an intuition (because you actually implement each layer) that you can't get from simply reading a book[s].
