About the Author
Sarah Lark’s series of “landscape novels” have made her a bestseller in Germany, her native country, as well as Spain and the United States. She was born in Germany's Ruhr region, where she discovered a love of animals—especially horses—early in life. She has worked as an elementary school teacher, travel guide, and commercial writer. She has also written numerous award-winning books about horses for adults and children, one of which was nominated for the Deutsche Jugendbuchpreis, Germany's distinguished prize for best children's book. Sarah currently lives with four dogs and a cat on her farm in Almería, Spain, where she cares for retired horses, plays guitar, and sings in her spare time.

Review of "Song of the Spirits"

I recently read the three books in Sarah Lark's "early New Zealand settlers" series. I enjoyed all of them, and started reading the next one as soon as I finished each one. While I wouldn't call the books classic literature, I loved the characters and was sorry when the whole series was over. Some reviewers have complained about each book's length. But I was happy to have nice long reads to sink my teeth into. It is hard for me to review this book in isolation from the other two. Probably the first book, In the Land of the Long White Cloud, was the best. But as stated, I thoroughly enjoyed the second and third books as well.

Another "Must Read" Generational Saga!

Sarah Lark does an equally magnificent job in the second volume in her Long White Cloud series. This volume centers around gold mining and the development of coal mining in newly developing New Zealand. Lark uses a meticulously researched background for the storylines of her mostly fictional characters. Therefore the stories ring perfectly true socially and historically. Her writing is extremely well-crafted so there is no one criticism to offer. This is once again a true page-turner that will keep the reader up at night! A most pleasurable reading experience!

Interesting for a 5th grader.

Let's see, disclaimer? I guess I have high expectations, having been brought up on Steinbeck and Twain. What I mean is that I really love great writing-- and this fell rather short of that. Sorry Sarah, but, while a fairly interesting tale with an interesting enough history about the Maori and the settling of NZ to keep me going, I continuously felt I was reading at a 5th grade level. Perhaps this was meant for teenagers? The only reason I read all three was that, honestly, it helped me to fall asleep at night. Not exactly a nail-biter.
