Great book!

I bought this for my 15 year old step daughter who loves to read. She couldn't put the book down and really liked it. I had read the series when I was a girl and remembered it was good. I would recommend the series for teen readers. Since to of the books are combined in this one publication, it is large and a bit heavy. If you're travelling, you may want to purchase individual books if weight and size are a problem (I wouldn't want to carry this around in my purse... too big and heavy).

So far a real good book....

I saw the movie flowers in the attic when I was a kid.... and let me tell you I am in my thirties and I still remember it. So like 20 years has gone by since i have seen the movie and I am in Half Price Books and I see this girl rummaging through V.C Andrews novels. I asked her what does V.C Andrews write and are her books any good? She tells me about the Flowers in the attic book and how there is like a whole series of them. And I freaked out. I told her how i had loved the movie as a kid. Well I bought the book and have been hooked every since. Now i haven't finished the whole book but when i put it down to deal with my every day life ( kids, laundry, cooking) the book is in the back of my mind. The two book comb Flowers in the attic and Petals in the Wind seem to flow there has been no gaps between the two stories that leave me wondering. So i would suggest if you plan on reading both books.... by this book combo. I think it was like $6.00 at half price books:) And dont be intimidated by the size it is a real easy read.

Good books, in a twisted way

I remember being very intrigued with the Flowers in the Attic movie that came out in the late 80s, and wanted to read the book someday. Well, someday came and I did. Then I found out there was a series! I bought the entire series and read it over the course of a year. Books 3 and 4 were a snooze-fest, but overall, it's an ok fiction read (with some questionable adult themes).

In 1929, the Social Sciences Department at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, began recording the oral histories of former slaves. During the mid-1930s, the Federal Writers’ Project undertook a similar effort, ultimately compiling more than two thousand interviews and ten thousand pages of material in seventeen states.

In this volume, thirty-six former slaves living in Tennessee recount what it was like to live under the yoke. Tennessee was not a large slaveholding state compared with others in the South. On the other hand, it was a leader in the abolition movement prior to 1830 and a powder keg of mixed Union and Confederate sympathies at the time of the Civil War. The voices in this volume thus recall the extreme conditions of slavery in the border country.

Probably the best of the Series

This is probably the best in the series of the interviews with former slaves done in the 1930s-in this case Tennessee. Here we get info on a long-forgotten lynching that tookplace in Nashville in 1892 and an early look at life at Fisk University. What makes these stand apart from the others is the fact that since Black Students from Fisk University interviewed these ex-slaves in 1929-30 (not to be confused with the later WPA Slave narratives), they felt freer to express themselves than they would have with White interviewers at the time. We get an eyeful to read as a result and a vairutally untarnished view. However, many of these are anonymous since some of the ex-slaves feared retributution for their remarks. All in all, an excellent read and a treasure chest for historians.
There was another book that was written in 1968 from the Fisk University Slave narratives called "Unwritten History of Slavery" that contains some of the same material. Interesting to compare the two.

Slave narratives without too much dialect

The book is easier to read than some slave narratives because excessive dialect has been changed to plain English. Just enough remains to provide a little flavor - the word marster is often used for master, for instance.

Each chapter is a first-person account by a former slave telling of life during slavery and after freedom. Based on interviews done in Tennessee, the stories are simply told and have the ring of truth. They are quite varied. Some of the people were mistreated as slaves, while a few had kind masters and enough to eat. The best-treated was probably Lucy, who says "It was a long time before I knew I was a slave." She was "a kinda maid and companion" to a young woman who married a U.S. Army Officer, and they traveled a lot.

Other stories are full of sadness and of course, some tell of neglect or cruelty. More of the interviewees witnessed extreme cruelty than actually experienced it. After all, these were people who survived into old age. Not being allowed to learn to read was a recurring complaint. The forced separation of families is a repeated source of anguish, although I was surprised at how many eventually found other family members after freedom came. Another theme is joining the Yankees during the Civil War, although accounts of actual battles are sparse. Apparently the interviewers were more interested in the slave experience and how the people coped after they were freed.

A number of the elderly persons who were interviewed were disapproving of the young people at that time, who did not have the manners that were insisted upon during slavery and who did not appreciate the great privilege of being free citizens.

I found this book very interesting. The presentation is elegantly simple with a clear typeface and adequate white space. The only illustration is on the cover.

Way too many liberties taken

Let me preclude this by saying that I do really like this book; however, the author took way too many liberties with her editing. I understand the omission of dialect to make the book easier to read. I do not understand rearranging and shortening the narratives (not all, but some). Unless the narratives were hundreds of pages long, I don't think you should shorten history. She also gave titles to all of the narratives. The Fisk-directed interviews were titled, so she titled the WPA-directed interviews. This makes it difficult to tell the difference between those who are most "honest" with the interviewer. Her edits made me wonder what the interviewee really said and if I was reading a full narrative. Again, I like the book, but I wonder what has been omitted.

"The Book of Wands is a brilliant read, both as a humorous story, and as a guide for awakening what we may call the "magical" side of life. Being an experienced practitioner already, I still found this book refreshing and rewarding to read. Neil presents valuable information on a subject little understood in our culture, and his presentation is very fresh and original, using his own life story as a teaching tool for others to understand. I loved going back to the brain lab in greater detail (was already there from reading Frontal Lobes Supercharge and related readings) and from there, I really enjoyed traveling through Neil's life to learn about his particular application of various magical skills. Feeling like a "lone ranger" at times, it is always refreshing to read of others who have certain skills to into deeper reality."

The book is OK (especially for the Kindle price of 0.99 - if you don't like it, you've only lost 0.99). BUT - I STRONGLY urge people to check out websites like highya.com (search for Affluence Edu there, or just google Affluence Edu) to read all the very negative reviews out there for the Boots on the Ground camp, and the Buying Summit, for which there are so many glowing (but vague) reviews on this website (makes you wonder ... are these reviews really genuine, or part of a promotion ....?). Apparently, fees charged for such camps and summits are quite exorbitant ($30K or more). If these glowing reviewers really thought these camps were so great and helped them make money from real estate - why weren't they upfront, and disclosed that they "paid $30K (gasp!) for these camps, but STILL thought they were worth it because of so and so reason?" All they say is these camps and summits were "informative" and "well organized" -- well guess what? There are tons of "informative" and "well organized" stuff out there in the Internet and Youtube, for FREE - no need to plunk down $30K for "informative" and "well organized" stuff that "will help you get started tomorrow"

A text that clearly uses Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) approach to diabetes

This book has dual purpose in that it is aimed clinicians who are in the Diabetes/ Endocrine field, and the lay person who is affected either directly or indirectly with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. There is no cure for diabetes and the trauma, helplessness, fear and anxiety can be over welling for the' suffer' and their family. For those that have had the condition for a while there can be depression ,a sense of prevailing negativity and thus the stress of daily diabetes `control' can lead to a decline in a person's ability to stay committed to their own self-care.

The author Dr Jen Nash UK-based Clinical Psychologist has had diabetes since when she was young and knows too well the `trials and tribulations that the condition can and does cause.
The writing is straight forward and succinct it caters to those who have been newly diagnosed as well those people who had the condition for a while. It uses CBT (Cognitive behavioural therapy) approach to diabetic management as well as other best practice, to produce a five step approach to attaining a healthy psyche. The text also covers information that may help those healthcare clinicians fill any gaps in their knowledge base, in using CBT approach to best help patients with evidence based solutions, as well as a targeted behavioural therapy.
