A Timeless Classic in Board Book

We were visiting my family over Thanksgiving and this was one of the books on their shelves that I chose to read to my almost 2yr old. We've tried story time before at home but he always gets fidgety. This was the FIRST book he let me read from cover to cover. Knowing that I HAD to buy this book for us at home, I began my search for "The Night Before Christmas". Amazon of course had dozens of different versions but I was having a hard time finding THIS version.

At last, I found the green and blue cover The Night Before Christmas that was the thick board book so my toddler could not rip or eat the pages. I love that this is the story in it's original context (yes Santa still has a pipe, yes mom is in her Kerchief, and Ere they drove out of sight) so I was DELIGHTED to order and receive before Christmas.

While I did choose to order "used" I was a little disappointed to see every page had sticker(s) from cover to cover. I had to gingerly pull each sticker off prior to reading to my son. This is a reflection of the seller and not of the book itself.

The book is a must have, traditional Christmas book good for kids of all ages but particularly sturdy to hold up against toddlers.

It is hard to write a review on this episode because I would rather be reading the next. More excitement added in Mick's life. I don't know how I would handle it with two women while buried in the future. This episode has both action and a little romance. You can't miss this episode!! Buy it and let's compare notes. Which is better, the story line or the author?

The Hitwoman Gets Lucky

Maggie trusts her mentor, Patrick Mulligan, so she doesn't think twice when he asks her to help him with a job in Atlantic City. It just so happens that she has tickets to a Barry Manilow concert and was planning to go anyway. So she and her good friend Armani (who is unaware of Mulligan's job) head off to AC with Maggie's lizard along for the ride because he didn't want to stay home alone. It's always a fun time for the reader when Godzilla (or god as he likes to be called) makes an appearance. He finds himself making quite an unexpected appearance during the job. That's all I'll say about that or the rest of the plot. You'll have to read to find out. It's a quick, fun read.

This novella is #2.5 in the series. Although it can be a stand alone I recommend you start with the first book (Confessions of a Slightly Neurotic Hitwoman) because you don't want to miss how Maggie became a hitwoman.

Disappointing but perhaps understandably

I was disappointed by the is book as I had chosen it on the basis of the positive reviews I read. Perhaps I like my fiction to be grounded a little more in reality but talking animals turned what I felt was a light-hearted and flippant read into somewhat of a farce. I didn't find the story funny.

However, it was well written and as a short story (had it not had the aforementioned talking animals) has potential as a series as it was an entertaining read.

Des Weiteren wird größtenteils auf Erzählkommentare, die Emotionen oder politisches akzentuieren und reflektieren verzichtet. Dadurch entsteht eine gewisse Freiheit für Interpretationsmöglichkeiten in Bezug auf einzelne Gefühlslagen des „Ich-Erzählers“ und seines Umfelds. Für Jugendliche bietet sich durch diesen Verzicht die Möglichkeit an, ähnliche Geschehnisse und emotionale Erlebnisse aus ihrem Leben mit dem des „Ich-Erzählers“ gleichzusetzen. Dies kann die Identifikation mit ihm erstaunlich fördern, vor allem die Armut der Familie und die kulturellen Differenzen, die innerhalb der Freundschaft herrschen, werden vielen Jugendlichen nicht fremd sein.
Eine weitere Stärke des Romans liegt in der historischen Darstellung. Die Ereignisse werden in ihm nur vereinzelt genau datiert, allerdings stimmen die Jahreszahlen und die teilweise erwähnten Monate und Jahreszeiten mit den historischen Fakten überein.
Beispielsweise am 1. April 1933, als sich Friedrich und der „Ich-Erzähler“ auf dem Heimweg von der Schule befinden, sehen sie, dass auf dem Praxisschild von Friedrichs Ohrenarzt das Wort Jude geschmiert wurde und dass sich neben der Menschenmasse vor dem Geschäft des Juden Abraham Rosenthals ein Nationalsozialist befindet, der ein Schild mit der Aufschrift „Kauft nicht beim Juden“ hochhält. Das Datum lässt auf den einen Tag andauernden Boykott jüdischer Geschäfte am 1. April 1933 schließen, was die erste Diskriminierungsmaßnahme des nationalsozialistischen Regimes darstellt, und die Antwort auf die jüdische Greuel- und Boykotthetze darstellen sollte.

Good condition but not what I bought

Condition was excellent but not new as I had thought I had bought. I really needed the access codes and the book did not come with them so I ended up having to drop another $50 on the access code. I could not afford more time without the book so I was stuck with it.
